Cascadia Daily Life is a new regional lifestyle magazine created to celebrate the landscapes, culture, and communities of the Pacific Northwest. As the designer of the premiere issue, I developed a visual system that would feel timeless, approachable, and distinctly rooted in the Cascadia region.
Role: Editorial design, typography, layout design, visual identity development, print production
In collaboration with Rhonda Prast, Derek Simmons & Joel Kimmel
CONCEPT
The publication was conceived as a companion to Cascadia Daily News' weekly newspaper, providing space for stories that extend beyond the news cycle. The editorial focus centers on place-based storytelling, travel, arts, outdoor recreation, and the people who shape life across the Pacific Northwest. The audience includes visitors discovering the region for the first time as well as longtime residents who want to deepen their connection to it.
VISUALS
Our design approach prioritized clarity, longevity, and a strong sense of place. I selected typography that feels classic rather than trend-driven, allowing the content to remain the focal point while establishing a refined editorial voice. We wanted to highlight large-format photography of the dramatic landscapes and visual character of the region.
ILLUSTRATIONS
In addition to the editorial design, I created illustrations to enhance the magazine's storytelling and visual identity. I illustrated a custom map of Fidalgo Island to accompany a mountain biking feature, and an advertisement for Cascadia Daily News, developing artwork that aligned with the publication's established brand while complementing the magazine's overall aesthetic.
These illustrations added moments of personality and craftsmanship throughout the issue, demonstrating the versatility of the visual language beyond photography and layout.
